Materials & system options

Soffit ventilation

If we find ventilation issues during a roofing or fascia inspection, we'll flag it — it's often an inexpensive fix that prevents bigger problems.

Flashing details in particular need to match the specific roofing or siding system involved — a step flashing detail that works with one siding profile may need adjustment for another.
Wood fascia repair limitations
Wood fascia repair can restore the immediate problem area, but if the root cause — clogged gutters, poor ventilation, or a flashing failure allowing water behind the board — isn't addressed, the same rot is likely to return. We'll tell you if we think a repair is a temporary fix rather than let you assume otherwise.
When related roof or siding work may be necessary
Fascia and soffit problems are frequently a symptom of something happening at the roof edge or wall transition — a failed flashing detail, undersized or clogged gutters, or a siding gap letting water behind the wall. If we find fascia rot, we'll check the roofing, gutters, and siding at that location, because fixing the board without fixing the cause just delays the next repair. In some cases, addressing it properly means coordinating fascia repair with roofing, gutter, or siding work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can rotted fascia be repaired, or does it need full replacement?
Isolated rot can often be repaired, but if the underlying cause (ventilation, gutters, flashing) isn't addressed, the rot is likely to come back. We'll assess the cause, not just the symptom.
What's the difference between step flashing and counterflashing?
Step flashing is installed in layers along a roof-to-wall transition as the roofing goes on; counterflashing covers the top of step flashing (commonly at chimneys) to shed water over it. Both need to work together to keep water out.
Is aluminum fascia better than wood?
Aluminum resists rot and requires less maintenance, but wood fascia repair is sometimes appropriate for isolated damage, especially if you're trying to match existing trim. We'll walk through the tradeoffs for your situation.
Why do I have ice damming at my roof edge every winter?
